The former world’s №8 Serbian Janko Tipsarevic is the permanent captain of one of the teams at the International teams tournament “North Palmyra Trophies”. This time he is going to try to lead his team to victory again. He will have to defend the champion title, which the “Lions”, led by the tandem Svetlana Kuznetsova-Janko Tipsarevic, won last year.
You are coming to the “North Palmyra Trophies” for the third year in a row, and every time the organizers change the format. This year, the tournament’s motto is “Every game matters”. Each set will last for 20 min and the winner will be determined by the sum of the games won during the match. What are your thoughts on a new format?
Personally, I love the new format. One of the things that tennis has been struggling with over the last few years is keeping the fans engaged during the whole match. The idea that “every game matters” is perfectly addressing that concern.
Dusan Lajovic said that the 2013 Davis Cup final became a turning point of his career that made him believe he could compete at this level and achieve great results. Can you recall a similar Davis Cup experience that took you to a new level in tennis? And what, in your opinion, do team tournaments in general bring to individual sports?
The Davis Cup win in 2010 was a huge boost for the whole Serbian national team. Not only emotionally but also statistically, as Novak Djokovic, Viktor Troicki and I had the best years in our career after that win. I love team competitions. I thrive in them both as a player, coach or captain.
