Before the final day of the third International Team Tennis Tournament "North Palmyra Trophies" the "Lions" held a one-game (point) advantage.
However, making up a single game isn’t too difficult, even with the new rules introduced by the tournament organizers.
Potapova and Khachanov Broke Away
The suspense of the previous two days was shattered in the first two matches of the final day. First, Russia’s Anastasia Potapova ("Lions") defeated her compatriot Diana Shnaider ("Sphinxes") 11-9 (3/3, 4/3, 4/3). Then, Karen Khachanov extended the "Lions" lead with a victory over Alexander Bublik, bringing the score to 14-10 (4/4, 4/4, 6/2).
Despite the "Sphinxes" winning the mixed doubles match, it had little impact on the overall score. Thanasi Kokkinakis, going into his match, needed to recover five games to secure victory for his team — a nearly impossible task, as his opponent was Spain’s Roberto Bautista Agut, who led their head-to-head record 1-0. The Spaniard started so strongly that his comfortable 5/2 lead after the first set allowed him to play the remaining two sets with ease—2/3, 3/4.
The "Lions" became two-time champions of the "North Palmyra Trophies" tournament. Karen Khachanov, Anastasia Potapova and Viktoriya Tomova successfully defended their title and repeated last year’s triumph.
