Results of the opening day at "North Palmyra Trophies"
On November 29 the third tennis teams North Palmyra Trophies tournament started. Once again, two international teams, consisting of professional players of the highest class, will compete for the main trophy of the competition. What’s new are the rules that change the usual view of tennis, because each game is limited in time to 20 minutes and every game matters.
Players responded to the new format with interest, unanimously calling it “intense.” “We managed to practice with Karen Khachanov and I was even tired in the first 10 minutes,” admitted Serbian Dusan Lajovic.
Nikolay Davydenko and Alexander Bublik saw promise in this concept and appreciated the great entertainment for the audience. “This tournament is a gem for the city,” Bublik said, “the atmosphere is even better than on tour because it’s more friendly.”
23-19 “Lions” lead
The score on the scoreboard is 23-19 at the end of Day 1, team Lions lead after the two close matches on the centre court. The last seconds of the match between Alexander Bublik ("Sphinxes") and Roberto Bautista Agut ("Lions") determine the winner. The Spaniard won 11-10 (5/2, 2/6, 4/2). At the press conference, Sasha said that according to such rules, “the advantage is on the side of the one who starts serving in the match, because he also finishes it,” and therefore Agut had an advantage.
Followed by the women’s double match began, Anastasia Potapova/Viktoriya Tomova from team "Lions" and Yulia Putintseva/Diana Shnaider from "Sphinxes" stepped on court. Potapova and Tomova snatched the victory out – 12-9 (4/3,6/2, 2/4).
Kids clinics, match of legends and Vesnina bid farewell to tennis
The first day at the "North Palmyra Trophies" turned out to be very eventful and emotional. The players went on an excursion to the Lakhta Center, which is currently closed to city residents, so this experience was unique. The panoramas opening from above left no one indifferent.
Three large-scale master classes for children were held by the competition participants, showing concern for the younger generation. A real show was put on on the court by tennis legends: Anastasia Myskina, Nikolay Davydenko, Mansour Bahrami and Elena Vesnina.
And then the carefree fun gave way to pleasant sadness, because Elena Vesnina said goodbye to tennis in St. Petersburg, announcing her retirement. The organizers prepared a touching ceremony, remembering all the heights of the athlete’s career and collecting video congratulations from her colleagues and friends.
